Job Description

About the job

Summary

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and provides the impartial scientific and technical advice to the MOD and other Government departments.

The role sits within a highly dynamic area, developing tools and techniques to improve MODs ability to assess conventional weapon effects and collateral damage, then using those tools to provide high-impact operational advice to senior decision makers. The advice provided is critical in ensuring MOD is able to meet its legal duty to protect civilians and ensure any use of weapons is proportionate.

Job description

You will work closely with Dstl colleagues across multiple sites to deliver outputs, drawing in domain expertise from across MOD, UK Government and international governments. The outputs you provide will be briefed to senior decision makers to provide them with the advice they require to take operational decisions.

You will provide timely, impartial, evidence-based advice to customers to enable them to make informed operational targeting and policy decisions.

Provide domain expertise on weapon effects and collateral damage to other Dstl projects.

Be responsible for the development and maintenance of physics-based fast running engineering models.

Be responsible for weapon effects and collateral damage knowledge management, ensuring data is maintained and information and data are readily accessible, available and exploitable.

You will be working within a small team of weapons effects analysts, engineers and scientists. You will be a technically capable, self-starting person with an ability to work effectively both within a team and independently.

Lead more junior team members, providing them with guidance, oversight, inspiration and direction.

Responsibilities

We are looking for someone with:

The ability to communicate technical outputs and uncertainty to a variety of audiences.

The ability to apply a broad variety of analytical techniques to define and analyse problems to tight timescales.

Existing knowledge of software engineering principles.

The ability to rapidly assess the situation, and then dynamically plan, conduct and report analyses in very short timescales (days at most), with little or no notice.

The initiative to plan ahead in order to prepare for and pre-empt reach-back and other support to operations demands.

The capability to routinely interact with military staffs and commanders and communicate complex analyses to them clearly and concisely.
