Job Description

The Electoral Commission is a body independent of government which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity, reporting direct to parliament.

A small yet high-impact organisation, our work is wide-reaching and of significant public interest. Our role has risen in importance - for politics, for the electoral community, and for the voter. From social medias impact on political debate to increasing devolution of election powers, our work is at the heart of some of the most passionately discussed topics of the day.

A compelling opportunity has arisen to lead our in-house legal and governance team as our General Counsel. This important role will report directly to our Chief Executive and work alongside our Executive Team, informing decision-making across the Commission. You will do this through inspirational leadership of our legal and governance experts, harnessing their commitment and capability to deliver insightful strategic advice to our most senior stakeholders. Your work will help ensure that the Commission is respected and trusted wherever it operates and will help safeguard our interests.

You are a solicitor or a barrister with significant experience advising decision-makers on public and administrative law. Credible and authoritative, you can also evidence a track record leading and motivating high-performing teams, applying strategic and legal judgement, and influencing in a complex environment.  You will impress us with your capacity to quickly grasp and effectively respond to client needs - which will sometimes involve constructive challenge - and with your political acumen, your sound judgment, and your integrity.
