Job Description
Illuminas NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) Bioinformatics group are looking for an enthusiastic and highly numerate bioinformatician to join their team based in Cambridge, UK to support the development of new NIPT products and help maintain on-market solutions. Members of the team work in close collaboration with wet lab scientists to support assay development and with software engineers to support software development. The team is responsible for experimental design, data management, data analysis, algorithm development and bioinformatics software development. The ideal candidate will be able to work in a cross-functional team, translating the challenges faced by the group into bioinformatics solutions. The position requires a quantitative background in order to be able to define the appropriate statistical model or algorithmic approach for a given problem. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Build robust pipelines and ad-hoc scripts to analyse sequencing data and organize the results to enable further analysis Write production-quality implementations of data normalization and machine learning algorithms for inclusion in Illuminas DRAGEN Bio-IT software Support the assay development team with experimental design and data analysis Assist in developing and optimizing novel algorithms to improve product performance and patient outcomes Regular communication of analysis results and other findings to a cross-functional team Produce documentation of data analyses, custom software tools or software development activities to meet the requirements of IVD product development Act as a subject matter expert in response to customer queries or other questions raised by the service and support teams Skills and experience Required Proficiency in scripting using python or bash Comfortable working in a UNIX environment Demonstrated ability to write readable, well-documented and unit-tested code Proven ability to answer questions by identifying, cleaning, analysing and visualizing data Solid understanding of statistics, linear models and machine learning techniques Experience with C++, C or C# Able to communicate complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience Desirable Experience with version control systems (e.g., GitHub) Proficiency in using R and the tidyverse for data analysis Experience working with Next-Generation Sequencing data or other genetic information Education Typically requires a masters degree or PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science or related discipline Biology or genomics knowledge preferred
