Job Description

Hello, we’re Kaleidoscope Health and Care. We’re a 4-year-old start-up working to improve health and care in the UK.

Are you passionate about engaging communications- Do you want to be part of an organisation that puts kindness at the heart of its work- Do you have an interest in health and care- Then we have just the role for you.

We are looking for an experienced communications professional to be the primary person for Kaleidoscope’s external communications, from developing strategy and ideas to creating and publishing content. You will be managing your own varied workload, while working closely with others.

Who we are

Since birth, we’ve grown from 2 to 21 great people. We now have a webinar studio, a ping pong table and a set of ridiculously heavy doors that used to hang in a pub in Peckham. But what hasn’t changed is that we’re still a social enterprise using our earnings to further our mission: to work with others to build a future that is connected, kind and joyful.

We meet this mission by advising clients across public, private and voluntary sectors on their strategy, supporting networks and partnerships, and designing and facilitating a whole host of face-to-face and digital events.

We also play with ideas that help our mission, even if it costs. We run Melting Pots, both regular and super-sized. We’ve awarded the world’s largest health science-fiction writing prize. We’re committed to thinking up new ideas and seeing which work wonderfully, which flop fantastically, and which should never be touched by anyone, ever again.

Who you are

Our first requirement is that you’re kind. Life is too short to work with people who aren’t. Second, you’ve got to be somewhere on our wavelength. We’re not a normal organisation. In fact we think the basic template of energy-sapping, soul-crushing, computer-says-no, normal organisations is fundamentally broken.

Beyond this, there is no ‘right’ sort of Kaleidoscopian. We want a company inclusive of different and unique people. If you’re reading this wondering ‘is it really for me-’ please get in touch to chat. You can also read a snapshot of Kaleidoscope life.

The role can be partly shaped around your expertise and the direction you think it should take, but will include the following:

- Setting the strategy and standards for Kaleidoscope's external communications.

- Managing Kaleidoscope's website, including creating, editing and publishing content to required standards.

- Ensuring that Kaleidoscope’s work and personality is effectively reflected on our social media channels.

- Ensuring Kaleidoscope's brand, in tone and visuals, is clear and consistent and conveys our personality.

- Advising colleagues and clients on all aspects of communications.

- Working with colleagues to plan and implement digital communications and campaigns.

You will have the following skills and experience:

- Experience of writing and editing for a range of audiences and channels: you could be editing a colleague's project report to showcase our work, writing a client newsletter for a specialist audience, or creating content that conveys the playful part of Kaleidoscope's personality.

- Experience of running social media accounts: you will know what makes an engaging tweet, when to play it straight and when to deploy an emoji.

- Experience of content management systems: ideally, you will be familiar with WordPress, but other CMSs are valid.

- Good judgement: you will have experience of advising and negotiating with colleagues/clients on the most appropriate communications approach.

- Confidence to challenge colleagues: some of them might have outlandish ideas and you'll need to know when to run with them and when to put the brakes on.

- Creativity: our biggest asset is the ability to take risks others don’t take. You won’t be afraid to try fresh ideas, and not mind when some crash and burn spectacularly.

- Interest in health and care: you don't need to be an expert, but you do need enthusiasm and curiosity.

- Attention to detail: you will be able to spot a typo or broken link at 50 paces.

- Proactive and flexible: you will enjoy taking the initiative and be comfortable managing competing and changing priorities.

But I’m afraid if you’re not kind, well, we might as well part company now.

Salary

At Kaleidoscope pay is decided through a mix of individual decision and whole organisation discussion. When you join, we'll make you an offer in the range of £30,000- £40,000 based on your skills and experience. Within your first year you will “own” your salary decision: we can tell you more about that if we meet.

Hours

This is a permanent position, of four or five days a week. It is based at our offices in London SE8, but we accommodate some remote working.
