Job Description

The Natural History Museum (NHM) is a world-class visitor attraction, leading science research centre and commercial event space. We use our unique collections and unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million specimens, both in our London and Tring museums, spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually.

We use our unique assets and unrivalled expertise to address some of the greatest challenges facing society and the natural world, including climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, disease eradication, the management of natural resources, and the health of our oceans. Our work is more relevant than ever as a result of human impact on the planet. Through sharing our knowledge and scientific research with diverse global audiences, we will create advocates for the planet: citizens who feel sufficiently informed, confident and motivated to take wise decisions, to get involved, and to use their influence to make a positive difference.

We are at a pivotal moment in our history as we will soon launch a new strategy setting out our role as the natural world faces increasing threats. Building on our world-leading collection, global reputation for science and as one of the world’s leading visitor attractions, the NHM has ambitious plans leading up to the 150 anniversary of the opening of the Waterhouse Building in 2031, making this a truly exciting time to be part of the NHM team.

About the role

In order to further our aims of creating a resilient and sustainable organisation to support the work of The Natural History Museum we are developing our commercial business, and as a part of that the retail business is seeking to increase income for the museum.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a commercially driven professional to spearhead growth, develop a great team and contribute to a wide range of Museum initiatives. Reporting to the Head of Retail, you will manage the shop management team, Retail Support Manager, and the Visual Merchandising Manager.

Our ranges include jewellery, books, toys, educational products, clothing, homeware, gifts and stationery and turns over approximately £9 million a year. The retail business is split across 3 permanent onsite shops and additional temporary ones in line with exhibitions or pop up opportunities onsite.

About you

We are looking for an energetic, creative and resilient person with proven retail management experience who is determined to succeed commercially; someone who has customer service at their core and can develop and lead their team to deliver a world class shopping experience to our domestic and overseas visitors.

The Retail team works in close co-operation with teams from across the Museum and an ability to build and maintain cross department relationships is key to the success of this role and retail within the museum.

Closing date: 9 am on Wednesday 11 December 2019 Interviews expected: 18 or 19 December 2019
