Job Description

Are you looking for a job that:

• Has a real impact on the lives of students in higher education.

• Requires excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.

• Values integrity, independence and quality of outcomes.

• Is part of a friendly and supportive team.

• Contributes to society by ensuring fairness and positive improvement in higher education.

If you answered ‘yes’ to all of these then being an Assistant Adjudicator at the OIA may be right for you.

Who we are and the Adjudication role:

We are the independent complaints scheme for higher education students in England and Wales. We deal with complaints from students about their higher education university or college and our Assistant Adjudicators’ job is to resolve the complex and entrenched cases. As well as being the decision-maker for complex cases, Assistant Adjudicators also help shape the development of policies and procedures related to complaint handling in the higher education sector.

The role is varied and interesting and requires interaction with students and universities/colleges on a regular basis. Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills are essential, as well as the ability to process and evaluate information quickly to identify relevant points and reach a decision on the evidence provided. It goes without saying that integrity, independence and sound judgment are key skills we are looking for. These may have been acquired from various work and life experiences.

While knowledge and experience of the higher education sector would be helpful, it is not essential. We are looking for people who share our values and have the skills and aptitude to help us achieve our goal of providing an independent complaint handling service. Please use your cover letter to tell us what you can bring to our organisation and how your background and experience matches what we are looking for.

Assistant Adjudicators are based in our office in Reading. Further information about the work of the OIA, our Values and what our staff think of working here can be found here: http://oiahe.org.uk/about-us/.

Our Adjudication Team is a busy, vibrant and friendly working environment. You will be required to work autonomously as well as being part of an inclusive team. We want our people to progress with us. We therefore provide opportunities to develop new skills and widen professional knowledge and expertise.

We value diverse backgrounds, life experiences and perspectives, and have a supportive and inclusive organisational culture. We would like our organisation to be more representative of our community and the users of our services and welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds. In particular we would welcome applicants from Black, Asian and other minority ethnic backgrounds who are currently underrepresented amongst our people.

Our benefit package:

We offer the following salary packages and benefits that include:

• A starting salary of between £34,003 and £39,822, depending on experience.

• 35 hour working week with the opportunity for some home-working after successful completion of probation

• Holiday entitlement of 28 days (rising to 33 days) plus bank holidays

• Generous reimbursement of gym fees following successful completion of probation

• Attractive USS defined benefit pension scheme

• Season ticket loan
