Job Description

BBC NATIONAL ORCHESTRA OF WALES

DIRECTOR

For 90 years the BBC National Orchestra of Wales has been at the heart of the cultural landscape of Wales, occupying a distinctive dual role as both broadcast and national symphony orchestra.

The orchestra performs a busy schedule of concerts throughout Wales, the UK and on tour internationally, working with the world's leading conductors and soloists. As part of BBC Wales, and supported by Arts Council Wales and BBC Radio 3, BBC NOW is an ambassador for Welsh music, championing composers and musicians, as well as performing core repertoire and the broadest range of music at the highest level. The orchestra also works closely with the BBC National Chorus of Wales, one of the leading large mixed choruses in the UK.

Innovative participation work and community engagement form an integral part of the orchestras activities, notably its ground-breaking work with special-educational needs schools and deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people. Last year, the orchestra won the 2018 Fantastic Families Award for its performance of the first-ever Relaxed Prom.

Based at BBC Hoddinott Hall in the Wales Millennium Centre, BBC NOW has gained a reputation as one of the UKs foremost soundtrack orchestras, recording soundtracks for Doctor Who, Casualty, War & Peace, Hollow Crown and David Attenboroughs Life Story.

The Directors responsibilities will include the overall leadership of the orchestra, strategic planning, artistic vision, financial and administrative management, development of commercial work, and building and maintaining internal and external relationships.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to lead, motivate and inspire large groups of staff and orchestra members, promoting best practice and equality of opportunity and providing clear strategic direction and artistic vision. You will have a good knowledge of classical music, performance, conductors and soloists, together with strong advocacy skills and a natural ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

In addition, you will bring excellent business skills, combining a track record in the management of significant budgets with commercial flair and the ability to manage the orchestra within the internal BBC market.  This will be supported by your understanding of marketing and a commitment to audience development, with an innovative approach to identifying opportunities for the orchestra and attracting and retaining new and diverse audiences.

The Director of BBC NOW is a member of BBC Cymru Wales' senior leadership team and will be expected to contribute to the overall strategic development and direction of the BBCs content and services in Wales including the organisations cultural and arts remit beyond the orchestra.
