We have an exciting opportunity for two Medical Officers to join Dstls Toxicology, Trauma and Medicine (TTM) Group at Porton Down. TTM Group's work is aimed at preventing or mitigating the lethal and incapacitating effects of chemical agents and toxins, as well as physical and traumatic injuries, by exploring pre- and/or post-exposure medical therapies as well as novel concepts for passive protective measures. The work covers early stage creative research through to advanced drug development and drug licensure.It also includes volunteer studies of the effects that protective measures have on military task performance. You will provide medical support across this range of defence activities, with a particular focus on drug development and licensure.
We are looking for someone who has:
A GMC Licence to Practise.
At least two years of post-foundation year 2 experience in a clinical specialty (a CCT in any medical specialty (particularly pharmaceutical medicine), general practice, anaesthetics or critical care, would be highly desirable).
Appropriate skills and experience to provide medical oversight of volunteer studies and a commitment to remain clinically current.
Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to form strong working relationships with the existing Dstl medical team, scientific staff, military and non-military partners.
Knowledge of the regulatory environment associated with developing and licensing drug products.

Be part of an integrated team, working closely with medical colleagues and scientific research staff.
Get involved in numerous projects, e.g. our medical countermeasures research and pharmaceutical development programmes, human volunteer trials within defence research programmes and medical advice to military operations.
Develop internal and external networks to ensure knowledge is appropriately shared and exploited within both the military and civilian environments.
Maintain your CPD to ensure your advice to projects and relevant external organisations is current. External medical attachments (up to one day each week) to maintain clinical currency would be encouraged and facilitated.
Be willing to undertake pharmaceutical medicine specialty training or the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine (if not already completed).
Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:
We would like a medically qualified individual with:
A GMC Licence to Practise

Appropriate skills and experience to provide medical oversight of volunteer studies
A commitment to remain clinically current
Knowledge of basic science underpinning medicine
Awareness of basic research principles
An understanding of the legal framework around the conduct of Clinical Trials.
Working conditions
Predominantly based at the Porton Down site.
Depending on ongoing work activities, we may ask you to be contactable and available to travel to Porton Down and other trial sites out of hours.
Occasional travel to other sites may be required.
Dstl may offer up to 20% time for continuing external clinical commitments (e.g. working in the NHS to maintain core clinical competencies in support of the organisation).
There may be opportunities for limited overseas travel, depending on project requirements.
