Non-Executive Directors

Remuneration: £6,157 per annum for a time commitment of 2-3 days a month

University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has an annual income of c£750m and over 11,000 dedicated staff operating across our two busy acute sites at Royal Stoke University Hospital and the County Hospital at Stafford and delivering services at Bradwell community hospital.  We provide a wide range of acute and specialist healthcare services to our local populations in Staffordshire, South Cheshire and Shropshire and are also a Major Trauma Centre for a wider population of 3 million people stretching from Anglesey to the Peak District.  

Our services represent more than half of the Staffordshire health and social care economy and we are working collaboratively through ‘Together We’re Better’ with our partners, commissioners and our public to integrate services, deliver more of these closer to home and create a sustainable model for the future.  

Our 2025 Vision sets out a clear aim to become one of the top university teaching hospitals in the UK and establish a world-class reputation.  We have made significant investment in services, research, facilities and our organisational culture however we still have more to do to fulfil our ambitions.  We have been placed in financial ‘special measures’ since March of last year and the recovery of this position is a key priority.  Our recent CQC report indicated that we still ‘Require Improvement’ in several areas, however the professionalism of our dedicated staff has been strongly recognised.  We are proud of our rating of ‘Outstanding’ for ‘Caring’.

Recognising the scale of our financial, operational and strategic challenges and with a new Chair in post, we are now seeking to reshape and strengthen the skills and experience within our Non-Executive Directors.  For two positions we need financially qualified leaders with recent, relevant experience gained within large, complex organisations.  These individuals will Chair the Audit Committee and the Finance and Performance Committee respectively.  We are also looking to make two further Non-Executive appointments and are seeking those with leadership experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Commercial contracting and Private Finance Initiatives

• Information Management and Technology 

• NHS leadership, including system wide working and transformation

• Broad medical or clinical background preferably in General Practice or Nursing 

For all appointments we will be seeking inspirational leaders who have operated at or near Board level, who can bring a strong understanding of good governance, a patient-centred focus, positive energy and fresh thinking to challenge and support our committed Board and help to position us for a successful future.
