Job Description

With member unions representing almost six million working people from all walks of life, the TUC campaigns for a fair deal at work and for social justice at home and abroad. We are now looking to appoint to the following position: ECONOMIC & SOCIAL AFFAIRS - ESAD The Economic and Social Affairs Department plays a key role in ensuring that the TUC is at the heart of public debate in areas including rights at work, the shape of the UK labour market and the strength of the economic recovery. We are now looking for an outstanding individual to lead this dynamic department and take responsibility for a wide range of policy and campaign areas including: macroeconomic and fiscal policy, pay, labour market (including employment rights) and pensions policy, corporate governance and capital markets, social security and the welfare state and industrial, energy and environment policy. Temporary leave cover for one year with a possibility of further temporary extension 35 hours per week Monday to Friday Based at Congress House, London, WC1B 3LS This is a rare opportunity for someone with a keen interest in public policy and a proven entrepreneurial approach to influencing policy makers and opinion formers. Reporting directly to the General Secretary, you will represent the TUC at the highest level with government, employers and other bodies. The TUC actively welcomes applications from within and from outside the trade union movement. You will need: - Experience of representation and advocacy at a senior level while working in a highly politicised environment - Excellent influencing, negotiation, interpersonal and written communication skills - Public speaking and media experience - Research management and data analysis experience - People, project and financial management skills - A good understanding of economic policy debates and at least two of the other policy areas covered by the Economic and Social Affairs Department - Sympathy with the goals of the trade union movement Closing date for receipt of completed application forms is Friday 6th May 2016.
