Purpose of the Role
Friends of the Earth is seeking an Interim Head of Finance to lead the finance team over the next 6 months during year end and a strategy refresh, and to credibly engage senior managers in allocating resources effectively to our priority work and campaigns.
You will ensure sound financial management and regulatory compliance for Friends of the Earth Limited and Friends of the Earth Trust (a charity), as well as lead an improvement in reporting and advise on financial, legal or tax implications in operational work, projects and strategic initiatives.
This role can be full or part-time. Please specify on your application your preference.
The main focus during the 6 month period, in addition to usual financial management responsibilities, will be:
- Ensuring the provision of timely and accurate financial information and analysis to assist in key decision making by Board and Senior Management.
- Leading the year end process and manage the audit (year-end 31st May) ensuring accurate reporting for both companies, including statutory reports;
- Review current financial reporting and align to new strategy, particularly in relation to restricted and unrestricted funds and projects;
- Review the roles and structure of the team to meet future needs of the organisation
Key Skills and Attributes
- Qualified accountant (or equivalent experience) with significant practical experience at senior level, including experience in the charity sector.
- Demonstrated experience of:
- Forecasting and budgeting in a complex rapidly changing organisation
- Up to date technical accounting skills
- Management accounting, analysing trends and making recommendations
- Experience of managing and building high performing teams
- Leading strategic financial planning and/or translating strategy into operational plans, implementation and monitoring progress.
- Enthusiastic approach to work and a desire to achieve outcomes
- Ability to credibly engage senior managers
- A commitment to the values and work of Friends of the Earth
About the Team
Friends of the Earth's Finance team is going through a period of transition after many years of stability. The team includes a Finance Manager and Reporting Accountant, both qualified accountants, as well as a Management Accountant and two part-time Finance Assistants. The team works closely with budget-holders across the organisation as well as Fundraising and the Supporter Care team which processes all income. There is an opportunity to review roles and remits to ensure the team is aligned to support delivery of the strategy and development of the team.
