Job Description

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is a ministerial department at the heart of the Governments economic and social agenda, focused on creating great places to live and work and giving more power to local people to shape what happens in their area. DCLGs role is to deliver four strategic areas during this Parliament: 1) Driving up housing supply to deliver 400k affordable homes. 2) Increasing home ownership by implementing the Governments Right to Buy manifesto commitment for existing social tenants, and delivering 135k shared ownership properties. 3) Devolving powers and budgets to boost local growth in England by building the Northern Powerhouse, creating the conditions to drive local growth including bespoke deals with places, and boosting local and neighbourhood decision making. 4) Supporting strong communities with excellent public services, including reform of the local government financing system towards 100% business rates retention by 2020, delivering the extended Troubled Families programme, developing approaches for tackling homelessness, and overseeing the Governments faith and integration work. The roles We have exciting opportunities across our policy teams where you will work at the cutting edge of turning the Governments electoral priorities into reality. This will involve working closely with Ministers on high-profile issues which are often at the forefront of the media and which make a real difference to people, businesses, and communities. These roles are available across our Higher Executive Officer, Grade 7, and Grade 6 seniority levels. Alongside this, we also have opportunities within our policy and operational delivery arm. Our European Programmes and Local Growth Delivery Directorate is responsible for the delivery of European and other Programmes designed to support economic growth at a local level by making funding available to local organisations. All of these roles offer an opportunity to work across government and with external stakeholders across the public and private sectors to unblock barriers to develop, support, deliver and implement Government policy and programmes that have a real-world impact. Location DCLG has offices across a range of locations in England with our principle office located at 2 Marsham Street, London. The Department is happy to consider basing roles and appointees at any of our locations, however, applicants should be aware that the advertised roles are likely to require weekly attendance in London. What we are looking for We are looking for applicants who understand, are interested in politics and are excited by being involved in the running of the country, but are equally able to serve a Government of any likely political complexion. Most of all, we are looking for people with the right skills and behaviours, from any sector or background, to support and lead our exciting agenda.
