Job Description

Open Society Justice Initiative Budapest or London As part of its work on equality and inclusion, the Open Society Justice Initiative works to achieve meaningful realization of anti-discrimination norms and transform public discourse on equality. Specific areas of work include policing, housing, education, employment, and migration. We use a wide variety of tools including research, advocacy, litigation, and strengthening civil society to challenge discrimination. Across all these areas we focus on remedies, and seek to create and employ data to reveal discrimination. Job profile Based in London or Budapest, the Policy Officer for Equality and Inclusion Program will work with a high degree of autonomy, developing and implementing projects, largely in Europe with some work in other regions. The ideal candidate will have seven years or more experience working on anti-discrimination, policing/criminal justice, citizenship and/or related fields and have a strong commitment to equality and the defense of human rights. Suitable candidates of migrant or minority background and those from communities affected by these issues are strongly encouraged to apply. Essential duties and responsibilities will include: - Serve as an integral member of the Justice Initiatives Equality and Inclusion team; - Build relationships with civil society partners, affected communities, institutional officials, academics and OSF colleagues working on related issues that advance social change on these issues; - Provide technical advice and subject-matter knowledge to partners within/outside OSF; - Design and support advocacy campaigns targeted at local or national institutions and governments; - Organise and conduct training for civil society, institutions and officials on related areas and good practice; - Manages projects that include staff within/outside OSF which may be regional or global in nature; - Conduct research and analysis, track developments and good practices for use in project materials and in development of strategies; - Draft and edit reports, briefing notes and formal submissions as required; - Undertake administrative tasks to support project activities as described above; - Significant travel required. Candidate profile - Bachelors degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent experience/education; graduate degree preferred; - At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in a an organization relevant to the duties of this role is typically necessary to develop the skills required for this role; - Experience working on anti-discrimination, policing/criminal justice, migration and/or related fields; - Experience working with communities on related issues, utilising a range of tools such as capacity-building, strategic planning, community organising and campaigning; - Demonstrated ability to conduct research, write and edit a range of different materials including reports, briefs, blogs and submissions for different audiences; - Experience working directly with law enforcement officers and agencies is highly desirable; - NGO experience essential, ideally within a human rights and/or legal organization; - Project management skills, including the ability to exercise effective and inclusive leadership, gather evidence and research to inform strategies and implement and evaluate activities; - Ability to interact and develop strong relationships with a wide range of actors from diverse cultural, geographic, economic, political, and social contexts; - Strong written and oral communication skills; - Team player, with the ability to connect with very different constituencies and internal OSF players well as work independently, with a high degree of self-motivation and ability to set and meet goals; - Ability to work with a decentralized team and to travel frequently; - Strong networking and convening skills; - Strong analytical and research skills and familiarity with data analysis; - Excellent computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office and experience with internet research; some multimedia knowledge a plus; - Commitment to equality, diversity and the protection of human rights; - Fluency (oral and written) in English is indispensable; facility in other languages is highly desirable.
