Job Description

Second Step is a leading mental health charity in the South West offering support and hope to thousands of people experiencing mental health challenges.

Working hand-in-hand with the NHS and local authorities, we offer practical help and emotional support tailored to each individual and their recovery. Our goal is to inspire hope and change for everybody we work with.

We are looking to expand our team of Bank Workers to support our mental health services in Somerset, particularly our Step Down service based in Wells.

Bank Workers have the freedom to pick up any ad hoc shifts in any of our services when they are advertised.

This role will particularly suit applicants who are looking for flexibility and are interested in working varying shift patterns to supplement their income.

Here are some examples of the work that may be advertised to you:

  • 5:45pm-midnight shifts on weekdays or weekends with our Safe Haven Crisis & Recovery Centre in Weston-super-Mare. This service provides short term crisis support appointments - empowering people by working in a recovery-orientated way. We believe in a person-centred approach and the power of promoting independence and hope. You can read more about the service here: Safe Haven Crisis & Recovery Centre
  • 9am-5pm shifts on weekdays or weekends with our Step Down service. We are particularly seeking cover for our Wells site but may also seek cover for our Yeovil site on occasion. The service helps people settle back in the community after spending time in in-patient care. We support clients with practical living skills as well as emotional support to encourage clients as they rebuild their confidence and resilience and reconnect with their community. You can read more about the service here: Step Down
  • 5:30pm-11pm shifts on weekdays or weekends with our Crisis Safe Space service in Frome, Glastonbury or Bridgwater. These services are designed for individuals in Somerset who need immediate and short-term crisis prevention and do not require more intensive care from either an emergency or inpatient service. You can read more about the service here: Crisis Safe Space
  • Opportunities for Fixed Term employment contracts may also arise for Bank Workers in these services or others. This involves a fixed number of hours with a service for a set period of time. Bank Workers also have access to our other internal job adverts. Some of our Bank Workers choose to move into permanent employment with us.

About You:

You will need to:

  • Have experience supporting people who are experiencing mental health difficulties. This could include volunteering or responsibilities outside of work.
  • Have compassion, empathy and passion for supporting others.
  • Be a good communicator and an active listener.
  • Be good at building trust with people you work with.
  • Be willing to learn and develop your skills.
  • Have confidence working alone or as part of a team.
  • Be IT-literate and able to record information on a computer system.
  • A valid driving license may be beneficial but is not essential.

What can you expect from working for us?

This role offers a unique and flexible opportunity to gain experience working across mental health services in Second Step.

We offer internal training and eLearning, service inductions, regular meetings with the bank coordinator and access to our externally provided Employee Assistance Programme . There are also opportunities for further career development such as access to internal job adverts.

Whether you are at the start of your career in the health and social care sector - or are simply looking to pick up shifts alongside another job, this is a great opportunity to build experience, knowledge and skills while working with great teams to support our services and those using them.

Hours:

You will be able to accept bank shifts with us on an ad hoc basis.

Hours available vary depending on our services needs.

There is no minimum number of hours, but we do ask our Bank Workers to pick up at least one shift with us every 3 months.

Locations:

  • Our Safe Haven service is located in central Weston-Super-Mare.
  • Our Step Down service is located in Wells and Yeovil.
  • Crisis Safe Space has sites in central Bridgwater, Frome and Glastonbury.
