Summary

This is a great opportunity to join Dstls Counter Terrorism and Security (CTS) Division and lead the reestablishment of hardware-based digital forensics within the Digital Forensics for Law Enforcement (DF4LE) team.

The DF4LE team provides digital investigation expertise to support law enforcement agencies in generating meaningful intelligence and recovering evidence across the full range of criminal investigations to combat serious and organised crime, counter terrorism, and protect UK borders.

Your skills will be applied across a diverse research area covering Digital Forensics, Internet Investigations, and image-based evidence such as CCTV.

With projects ranging from a few months to longer term effort over several years, you will develop links with practitioners, deliver research and solutions making an immediate impact on their work, and develop the hardware skills within the team. You will also provide technical leadership for small teams on specific pieces of work.

Job description

You will be working within a team of ~12 allocated across a range of projects and programmes with many distinct, but related, activities underway simultaneously. This role does not have any budgetary or formal line management responsibility but will include technical leadership and longer term planning to develop the capability.

In this role you will

Lead our efforts on examining and developing understanding of the operation of a wide range of consumer hardware,

Identify and exercise opportunities to extract data from the same range of devices,

Ensure the safe conduct of hands-on research on consumer hardware,

Continually look to enhance our hardware capability through understanding technology trends, identifying improvements in our equipment, and guiding appropriate technical development of staff,

Develop strong working relationships and opportunities with other capabilities across Dstl and external partners.

Responsibilities

You will have the desire to work with, and help direct, a team of researchers investigating the challenges for Law Enforcement associated with the latest developments in consumer technology. You will have the appropriate knowledge to refresh our approach to understanding hardware and ensure that the team develop and acquire the most appropriate skills and equipment.

Essential Qualifications

A formal qualification (or equivalent experience) relevant to studying and understanding the operation of modern consumer hardware devices, for example, a degree in electronic engineering.

Proficient in electronics rework techniques

Assessing future requirements in order to maintain hardware capability

Appreciation of the potential options for extracting data from modern electronic devices

Appreciation of the hazards associated with examining electronic devices
