Team Overview

The Standards and Audience Protection team are within Ofcoms Broadcasting and Online Content Group. We are responsible for setting and enforcing content standards to ensure that audiences are protected from potentially harmful and offensive content on the service we regulate. In doing so, we seek the best candidates from the UK's diverse communities to join the team.

Ofcom currently licenses around 2,000 television and radio broadcasters and has statutory duties to set and enforce standards for the content broadcast on those services. Ofcom also has duties to ensure that on demand programme services are regulated to the required standards. Our key role in this area is to ensure that appropriate protections are offered to audiences in an effective and timely way. As the technology people use to watch and listen to content continues to evolve, we need to address the challenges of the future of content regulation across different platforms

Purpose of the Role

Principals in this area will have responsibility for leading teams to deliver the enforcement of the Broadcasting Code and ensuring the appropriate audience protections across the broadcasting and on demand programme sectors, in accordance with our statutory duties.

Requirements of the Role

- Overseeing assessment of standards complaints

- Overseeing standards investigations including the drafting of high-quality decisions

- Taking ownership of work delivery to time, quality and cost across a range of complex and challenging standards and audience protection projects involving the broadcasting and/or on demand programme sectors

- Acting as an expert and leader in your own specialism/s but also demonstrating agility by taking responsibility for delivery across other areas of the teams remit

- Leading, developing, motivating and empowering high calibre colleagues to deliver the work

- Together with the Standards and Audience Protection Management Team, prioritising diversity and inclusion in all areas of the teams work and behaviours

- Collaborating closely and effectively with the Management Team, colleagues across the Standards team and other colleagues across Ofcom

- At all times working in accordance with Ofcoms values of agility, collaboration, empowerment and excellence

Skills, knowledge and experience

- Able to take responsibility for effective and timely delivery of high-quality work across the teams remit

- Strong track record of delivering complex work and/or projects to time

- Gets to the heart of complex issues, demonstrating command of detail and of the bigger picture

- Able to pre-empt, manage and resolve risks, escalating when necessary

- Able to produce and edit concise, high quality, well written drafts of high profile/complex documents, providing direction on style and tone and ensuring overall quality

- Able to quickly and effectively prioritise delivery of tasks under time pressure

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders

- Manages certain aspects of external relationships, acting as an ambassador for Ofcom

- Demonstrates good editorial judgement and strong knowledge and experience in the area of broadcast and/or on demand content standards

- Demonstrates sector and specialist knowledge, acting as an expert and thought-leader who can influence Ofcoms thinking and direction

- Acts as a positive role model for other colleagues, valuing diversity and encouraging others to do the same, showing fairness and respect

- Inspiring manager, with a strong track record of motivating, developing, empowering and delegating to colleagues effectively and efficiently

- Able to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability, for example, leading delivery of work in areas beyond own specialism/s, and scoping and implementing remit changes

- Able to identify and take account of strategic and other priorities, and direct resources accordingly
