Job Description

London Marathon Events Ltd (LME) is a world-leading for-profit events company that delivers thirteen world-class mass participation events every year including the London Marathon - the world’s greatest marathon, and the biggest one-day annual fundraising event in the world.

This is a pivotal moment in LME’s history and the recruitment of two new Non-Executives will complete the creation of a newly streamlined and restructured board. These Non-Executives will play a key role alongside a new Chair, and existing high-calibre board colleagues and senior executives, in developing and delivering an ambitious future for LME.

When Chris Brasher and John Disley created the London Marathon in 1981, their vision was to inspire people to become active and to generate funds to provide grants for sports and recreational facilities. Forty years on, the LME has grown into a £38 million business and an extraordinary force for good, which passes its surplus to The London Marathon Charitable Trust (LMCT) each year through corporate gift aid. LMCT is today one of the UK’s largest independent grantmakers providing support for physical activity, and in 2019 awarded grants across the UK totalling more than £11.6m

LME’s portfolio of running, cycling and swimming events, together with its community initiatives, aim to engage with and inspire people from the broadest possible range of abilities and backgrounds. It is the acknowledged world leader in maximising revenue for charities through mass participation events and to date its events and participants have raised more than £1 billion for thousands of charities.

The Covid-19 crisis has had a significant impact on the organisation, but the first virtual Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 4 October 2020 will join together some 45,000 runners up and down the UK – and across the world - and will be the most inclusive London Marathon ever.

For these roles we are looking for people with a real passion for and commitment to inspiring activity, the ability to energise and engage a diverse range of audiences, and to hold in balance the commercial and social goals of this unique organisation.

Candidates will be able to demonstrate experience in one or more of the following areas:

- strategic level experience encompassing digital marketing, CRM, customer data management and commercialisation, and consumer insights and behaviour.  This person will play a key role in supporting and challenging LME to help generate revenue by engaging more actively with the 1.5 million people whose information is held within the LME’s rich database.

- broad leadership credentials and experience of organisational development and change, gained at a strategic level, ideally in complex consumer-facing organisations. Candidates will ideally bring a track record that includes people development, leadership, shaping culture, and successfully managing diversity in the workplace. This person will contribute important perspectives to LME’s work in developing an inclusive and modern people strategy which can anticipate and respond to ongoing strategic, operational and culture change.

- A qualified accountant with senior-level experience in strategic finance roles in commercial settings, and knowledge of accounting practice, financial reporting standards and audit and risk governance.  Someone with this background will support the board in spotting strategic, operational and financial risks and opportunities, and in developing our plans and monitoring progress against them. They will help the board fulfil its responsibilities in terms of governance, and ensure that corporate risks are properly identified, prioritised and managed.

Diversity and inclusion is at the core of everything LME does and it warmly welcome applications from people from the broadest possible range of backgrounds.

The roles are remunerated at £4,000 per annum and the time commitment is expected to be around 1-2 days a month on average. Most meetings will take place at LME’s offices in Great Dover Street, not far from London Bridge station.
