Job Description

London, SE1

The newly created role of Executive Director provides a unique opportunity to lead The London Marathon Charitable Trust (The Trust), one of the UK’s major charitable funders of initiatives to encourage people to take part in physical activity.

The Trust owns, is responsible for and is largely funded by the surplus generated by its world-renowned trading subsidiary, London Marathon Events Ltd. (LME). LME organises the most popular marathon and the biggest one-day annual fundraising event in the world, as well as a dynamic portfolio of other running, cycling and swimming events, designed to engage and inspire the broadest possible range of abilities and backgrounds to take part. The success of the events organised by LME has enabled The Trust to award grants totalling more than £90 million to over 1500 projects across the UK.

The Trust and LME are in the final stages of implementing a governance review, and a new Strategic Framework will lead to The Trust and LME working much more together to achieve shared strategic objectives and ensure their impact is greater than the sum of the parts. With plans also taking shape to celebrate 40 years of The Trust’s grantmaking in 2021, this is an exciting and pivotal time to join this unique organisation.

The Executive Director of The Trust will be responsible for working with Trustees to establish and lead the delivery of the agreed objectives of the charity, overseeing the governance of The Trust  and for ensuring that Trustees have proper oversight of the work of its subsidiary, as well as for facilitating the relationship with LME.

For this role we are looking for someone with a passion for engaging diverse audiences and inspiring activity. This person will be an experienced leader with a strong understanding of the charitable sector.  Candidates for the role should be able to demonstrate senior-level experience of shaping and delivering strategic and operational change and of engaging externally with a broad range of partners and stakeholders to create impact. We are looking for someone experienced in leading and energising teams and working closely with and supporting non-executive boards. An authentic commitment to diversity of thought and an inclusive approach are also key requirements of the role. Strong inter-personal and relationship building skills as well as drive, commitment and enthusiasm are some of the qualities that will help our new Executive Director to thrive in this important role.

LME and The Trust are committed to diversity and inclusion and welcome applications from people from the broadest possible range of backgrounds.
