Job Description

The General Medical Council is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. It is dedicated to protecting patients across the United Kingdom by ensuring high standards of medical education and practice. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups.  We regulate a diverse group of professionals, who care for an increasingly diverse population across the UK.

Integral to the work of the senior leadership team this is an exciting opportunity to provide high level support to both our Chair and Chief Executive, providing high quality advice and professional support while leading three teams at the heart of the organisation.

It will require an ability to think and plan strategically, manage complex and sensitive relationships, act as a sounding board for ideas, lead a secretariat and well-established corporate governance team and our corporate review team.  To do this you will have the capacity to analyse complex policy and operational issues, build rapport and influence with senior leaders, promote the GMCs values and corporate strategy, and deal with the pressures that come at this level.

You will have experience of organisational leadership and managing high performing teams alongside the ability to play a visible, wider corporate leadership role. Experience of working with governance structures in a complex, high profile organisation would be an advantage along with the ability to provide credible professional advice on how our governance works. As this role will champion the GMCs equality, diversity & inclusion and the important role we play in leading and influencing the system on equalities, inclusivity and fairness for both patients and doctors, we are also actively encouraging applications from underrepresented groups.  We are looking for people from a range of backgrounds, and welcome broad perspectives, skills and experiences.

Politically astute, you will have a keen insight into public policy and have the intellectual ability to understand complex legal and procedural documents. You will foster excellent relationships internally and externally at all levels and bring high levels of energy, pace and influence.  Your keen intellect, vision, cultural competency, credibility and determination to get things done will make you a strong candidate for this uniquely interesting and demanding role.
