Job Description

This is an exciting and challenging role, with senior leadership responsibility, offering you the opportunity to deliver strategic defence export campaigns, which are vital for national security and prosperity, and to work on high-level exports policy issues. A key part of the role involves working across Government to develop consensus, identify an agreed way forward and advise Ministers on complex, fast-moving policy issues involving industry and the UK’s relationships with our allies and partners.

The work involves frequent contact with Ministers, senior industry and overseas stakeholders, and involves significant travel (sometimes at short notice) within the UK and abroad. There is a requirement for evening and weekend work at times, particularly during major Defence exhibitions.

Key Responsibilities: 

You will also work closely with organisations outside Government, with MOD colleagues, including Front Line Commands, with the Department for International Trade as well as other Government Departments and Agencies to advise Ministers and the Department on how MOD should support Defence Exports and the UK Defence Industry. You will lead the team on the coordination of key engagement opportunities for MOD such as at DSEI and the Farnborough International Air Show.

Current key campaigns that the post holder will be in charge of on behalf of Director Economic Security & Prosperity include Eurofighter Typhoon to Finland, future UK involvement in F-¬35 Global Support and various high value complex weapon campaigns. Recent policy work has involved interaction at high level with a number of overseas Governments.

About You

This role is critical to the success of the Government’s strategic export campaigns. To be successful in this high-profile role, candidates must be able to show resilience under pressure, and the ability to deliver complex work at pace.

It is essential in your application that you provide evidence and proven examples in each of the following selection criteria below in so far as you are able to. These responses will be further developed and discussed with those candidates invited for interview.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Commercially minded with highly developed business acumen, and a track record of success in complex and high value commercial agreements. 

A proven track record of senior level leadership, with excellent influencing skills and the ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders inside and outside of Government. 

Highly developed strategic skills, with the ability to set clear direction and translate strategic priorities into clear outcome focused objectives. 

The ability to navigate the political landscape, with a highly developed political antenna. 

Demonstrable ability to oversee the development of complex policies. 

Excellent analytical and problem solving expertise, with the ability to demonstrate project management techniques. 

Desirable 

Experience in the defence sector.

Knowledge of export campaigns.
