The SPS currently have exciting opportunities for extraordinary individuals to join us as Prison Officers within our various establishments across Scotland. 

You don’t need to have experience of working within a custodial environment to excel in these roles, what you do need is a genuine desire to make a difference to the lives of those within our care and the ability to demonstrate our organisational values in practice. Through our structured training programme and our investment in your continuous professional development, we’ll equip you with the knowledge and skills you’ll need to reach your full potential.

You can join the SPS at two different entry levels; Prison Officer – Operations or Prison Officer – Residential. Both roles play an equally important part in supporting our vision, but have different skill requirements.  

As a Prison Officer – Residential you’ll work within the accommodation areas of the prison and support those within our care by acting as a positive role model and encouraging participation in programmes and reintegration initiatives. We believe that this is key to achieve our vision of building a safer Scotland. You’ll work with people from all backgrounds and will be a critical contact for those within our care, so it’s essential that you’re an excellent communicator with a natural ability to build relationships. Your communication skills will also support you in influencing the behaviour of others in order to achieve results.

As a Prison Officer – Operations you’ll play a key part within a team responsible maintaining the security and safety of our establishments, visitors and our people. It’s essential that you understand the importance of following procedures and you’ll continuously uphold high standards. Your professional and pro-active approach will assist you when multi-tasking in busy areas of the establishment such as the electronic control room and front of house.
