Job Description

Location: Liverpool and Nationwide

2/3 days per month

The first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) works across the world, often in very difficult circumstances, to fulfil the mission of reducing the burden of sickness and mortality in disease endemic countries through the delivery of effective interventions which improve human health and are relevant to the poorest communities.

The School’s work in combating diseases such as TB, HIV/AIDS, malaria, dengue and lymphatic filariasis is supported by a research portfolio of over £210 million. The worldwide reputation of the School and the high calibre of its research outputs has secured funding to lead over 10 international consortia and product development partnerships aimed at reducing or eliminating the impact of diseases upon the world's poorest people.

After 12 years spent leading the Board of Trustees and overseeing outstanding progress and growth throughout the organisation, its Chair, James Ross OBE is stepping down and the School is looking for a new Chair of the Board to lead the institution through an exciting new chapter, focused on growing its research activities,  and on rebalancing its activity profile by increasing the learning and teaching offering in those areas of greatest global demand.

The Board of Trustees consists of a highly skilled, experienced and committed team. LSTM has access to Vice Presidents who are well placed to provide external support including lobbying of government. The Chair has an important role in building the profile of LSTM, lobbying of key ministers and as an ambassador of the School to external stakeholders such governments and key funders in the UK and internationally. Candidates for the post will consequently be adept at partnering with external stakeholders, demonstrating excellent networks and drawing upon a wealth of experience gained in different sectors.

The Chair of the Board of Trustees role requires exceptional influencing, leadership and governance skills, and very strong strategic and financial acumen. The successful individual will bring experience of leading at Board level, independence of mind, a commitment to diversity, and an understanding of the challenges and changes facing the LSTM and the communities that LSTM partners with.

This is a non-remunerated post with a time commitment of two to three days per month on average, with circa one day a month in Liverpool.
