Job Description

The Natural History Museum (NHM) is a world-class visitor attraction, leading science research centre and commercial event space. We use our unique collections and unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million specimens, both in our London and Tring museums, spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually.

We are at a pivotal moment in our history as we will soon launch a new strategy setting out our role as the natural world faces increasing threats. Building on our world-leading collection, global reputation for science and as one of the world’s leading visitor attractions, the NHM has ambitious plans leading up to the 150 anniversary of the opening of the Waterhouse Building in 2031, making this a truly exciting time to be part of the NHM team.

About the role

Working with the Head of Government Relations, you will support the development of the NHM’s profile and positioning within Government and relevant arms-length bodies.

Collaborating with a range of stakeholders across the Museum, you will also seek to develop and enhance relationships with key members of the Government and Civil Service at all levels in a wide range of relevant Government departments, and ensure timely provision of information via direct requests, Parliamentary and Government consultations and other briefing opportunities.

Our sponsoring Government department is DCMS and we work with BEIS, Defra, Number 10 and the Treasury amongst others. You will also provide public affairs support and advice to senior Museum staff, acting as a source of intelligence and analysis on government activity.

About you

This is an exceptional opportunity for an engaging and experienced professional to play a major role in the transformation of a world–renowned institution and challenge the way people think about the natural world.

You will have substantial experience in public/government affairs in a similarly busy and high-profile organisation; along with detailed understanding of the machinery of government and excellent contacts. You will possess excellent judgement, strong powers of persuasion and proven experience of working closely with senior staff and managing complex stakeholder relationships. You will be creative, curious and culturally sensitive with excellent communication skills and a strong eye for detail.

Closing date: 9am on Friday 29 November 2019 Interviews will be held on: 5 and 6 Dec 2019
