Job Description

The Natural History Museum (NHM) is a world-class visitor attraction, leading science research centre and commercial event space. We use our unique collections and unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million specimens, both in our London and Tring museums, spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually.

Our collection of more than 80 million natural science specimens is the world’s most scientifically important and underpins both our exhibitions and pioneering research programmes. Over 300 scientists based at the Museum tackle important global challenges, spanning mineral scarcity, food security and biodiversity loss. The Museum is globally renowned for excellence in science and research and championing digital capacity and innovation. This is in addition to welcoming over 5 million public visitors a year to our iconic building in South Kensington.

The Collections Programme is aiming to enhance the Museum’s ability to unlock access to these globally important specimens for scientific teaching and research, and to safeguard them for future generations. This ambitious programme with the potential to establish a completely new additional site for the museum and to plan this from scratch. This work is a priority for our new Museum strategy.

About the role

Working in a small friendly team, and closely with senior leadership and scientists right across the Museum this is an intellectually challenging post for someone looking to take the next step in their career. You will get an amazing insight into the behind the scenes life at the Museum – working out how to accommodate anything from ants to aardvarks, and how to maximise research access to our meteorites and manuscripts.

You will responsible for coordinating development of evidence to support decisions on what might move to a new site and running a process to engage colleagues in the design of a new scientific research and collections storage facilities.

About you

We are looking for someone who combines a passion for science with creative and systematic thinking. The NHM is a leader in the museum sector in using programme and project management techniques. This is a great chance to flex existing project management skills in a new, complex environment or, with our support, to gain qualifications such as Managing Successful Programmes.

The post holder may be responsible for the direct line management of programme staff. The Museum supports flexible working and applications from job-share partners are welcome.

Contract:  Fixed Term Contract: 23 months Closing date: 9am on Monday 2 December 2019

Interviews will be held on 11 Dec 2019
