Job Description

APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR

As the worlds leading institution for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, SOAS engages with the pressing issues confronting humankind today: democracy, development, economy, finance, language, public and corporate policy, human rights, migration, identity, legal systems, poverty, religion, and social change. We have a vibrant community, a global outlook and reputation, and a diverse student and staff body. Under Baroness Amos leadership, we have restructured, changed the financial base and launched new initiatives including a Foundation Year.  We have worked towards decolonising education by reviewing our curricula. We are tackling the attainment gap for BAME students.

As the new Director, you will provide SOAS with exceptional leadership. There is huge potential to build on the progress we have made and shape the future in exciting and innovative ways. You will be tasked with ensuring SOASs ongoing strategic development and its ambitions in relation to learning, teaching, research and international collaborations. Priorities will include maintaining the current momentum to deliver SOASs long-term financial sustainability; overseeing an outstanding student experience; and uniting students and staff behind shared values. The new Director will also have the opportunity to develop a new strategy that will tangibly shape the Schools future.

Ideal candidates will bring a successful track record of senior-level leadership in a complex organisation. You will have a history of working in an international context, preferably in SOASs core regions of Asia, Africa and/or the Middle East. You will have an absolute belief in SOASs core mission and values, identify easily with the intellectual ethos of SOAS and be a visible ambassador for the School.  You are likely to be an established and respected academic leader although there is also genuine open-mindedness about the possibility of an appointment from outside academia.
