University of the West of Scotland is seeking to appoint a new Chair of Court to succeed the current Chair, Dr Waiyin Hatton, from 1 February 2020.
University of the West of Scotland [UWS] is a proudly different university. We are seeking to appoint an exceptional individual to Chair the University Court - our governing body – to be responsible for the leadership and effectiveness of the Court and to play a central role in setting and maintaining excellent standards of corporate governance and institutional leadership, reflecting the principles set out in the Scottish Code of Good Higher Education Governance.
The Court sets the University’s strategic direction and advances the University’s core purpose to change lives and encourage enterprise through progressive higher education. Court members are drawn from the external community, students and staff with a mixture of appointed and elected Governors reflecting a variety of skills, experience and interests.
This is an exciting time for the new Chair to work with UWS Principal, Professor Craig Mahoney, as the University implements its new Corporate Strategy 2020-2025, due to be launched in January 2020.
Candidates should have a track record of successful leadership at senior and strategic levels within a large, complex organisation and have a proven understanding of higher education. Extensive experience of corporate governance issues is essential and a demonstrable commitment to the work of UWS and to transforming the lives of its students is key to success. Interest is sought from suitably qualified candidates who are highly skilled communicators, able to represent the University internally and externally, promoting its interests with key stakeholders regionally, nationally and internationally. The time commitment for the position is circa 50 days per year and applicants will be required to demonstrate that they have the capacity to fulfil this commitment. Remuneration for the Chair of Court position is offered at a rate of £16,350 per annum and appropriate expenses are paid. As part of the responsibilities of the Chair and to build effective relationships with University colleagues, frequent attendance on campus will be required. Meetings and other events will be held at all campuses – Ayr, Dumfries, Lanarkshire, London and Paisley – with the majority usually taking place in Paisley.
