Job Description

The Chemistry Product Development team at Illumina Cambridge are a team of synthetic and analytical chemists with a broad range of skills and experience that make a unique contribution to Illuminas Core Consumables Development group.  The team works in a highly multidisciplinary project environment on delivering the chemistry components of Illuminas DNA sequencing systems.

As part of an exciting expansion plan for our Core Consumables Development group, we are looking for a Staff Scientist to join our Chemistry Product Development team at Illumina Cambridge.  The role will involve developing the components and processes that underpin the key chemistries used in Illuminas sequencing-by-synthesis (SBS) technology.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of Illuminas continued growth.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

    Leading chemistry project teams
    Providing technical direction and coaching to the broader team
    Developing, characterizing and optimizing chemical systems and components
    Developing and evaluating new synthetic chemistry procedures and manufacturing processes.
    Improving existing synthetic chemistry processes.
    Process scale-up and transfer from R&D to manufacturing.
    Providing support for internal and external manufacturing operations.
    Developing analytical procedures for new products and processes.
    Written and verbal communication of plans, procedures and results.
    Liaison with other functions and sites as required
    Overseas travel will be required.

Education, Experience & Attributes required:

    Ph.D. in Chemistry or equivalent chemical sciences qualification.
    Extensive experience in chemistry / biotechnology industry.
    Experience with NGS / DNA sequencing / genetic analysis chemistries.
    Line management experience / project management skills highly desirable.
    Strong theoretical and practical chemistry skills.
    Expertise in process optimization and scale-up highly desirable.
    Good knowledge of modern preparative chromatography methods.
    Good knowledge of modern analytical methods (HPLC, Mass Spec and NMR).
    Experience with DoE / Statistical modelling methods & software packages.
    Ability to work as part of a highly efficient, collaborative team.
    Self-motivated and able to produce results to a deadline.
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
