Job Description

Loughborough University is looking to appoint an exceptional candidate to take up post as Chair of Council and Pro-Chancellor from 1st August 2020. This person will join the University at a time of unprecedented achievement, having been voted University of the Year by the Good University Guide for 2019, ranked fourth in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2019, the Times Higher Education Student Experience University of 2018, and rated Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Loughborough is an exceptional university. During uncertain times for higher education, and whilst others scramble for the safety of the pack, we are proud to be different. The combination of our excellent student experience, enterprising outlook, world class research and unparalleled sporting success gives rise to something that’s truly special and distinctive amongst the UK’s universities. Our strategy has four core drivers – ‘Investing in our staff’, ‘Educating for success’, ‘Growing capacity and influence’, and ‘Raising standards and aspirations’ – with research, teaching, enterprise and sport embedded in each. It’s not just what we do that makes Loughborough special, it’s our focus and our spirit. We are deeply competitive but committed to partnership working. We are determined to succeed and to motivate everyone to be the best they can be.

After eight very successful years, our Chair of Council will soon step down. Our next Chair will build on his success, leading the governing body in the renewal of our long-term strategy as we enter our next phase. The successful candidate will combine gravitas, commercial acumen, a commitment to inclusivity, strong intellect and senior experience of leading boards. They will be, or become, passionate about Loughborough University. If you share our vision, we look forward to hearing more about you. Loughborough particularly welcomes female applicants and those from diverse backgrounds, in line with the University’s commitment to representing a broad range of perspectives at Council level.
