IoD members are some of the most skilled and prominent leaders; from start-up entrepreneurs, to
listed company board members, directors in the public sector and CEOs of multinational
organisations. Membership equips leaders with a range of resources – representation on business
policy issues, business information, training, professional expertise, peer support network and
flexible working spaces.
The IoD is under no illusion - it must change to remain relevant, sustainable and reflective of today’s
leaders. Whilst its purpose and product offerings remain valued by directors across the UK and
beyond, its business model must change to reflect the different needs of sectors, industries and
regions. This is the time to show renewed purpose, professionalism, contemporary business practice
and a commitment to increase diversity.
A new Director General must be an outstanding leader and manager who can, with the Board,
triangulate successfully the business climate and the needs of the membership, the IoD’s product
offer and the IoD’s operating model. A key part of this will be in building the capacity of the IoD’s
regional teams and the networks.
Candidates may come from a range of different sectors and backgrounds, whether as a leader in
industry or in public life. Overall, this next phase for the IoD will require an individual able to
evidence experience and ability to deliver internal change management, internal leadership and
external profile in equal measure.
