Job Description

£11,000 (up to 24 days per annum)

Southampton, with travel to other MCA sites

With a history stretching back almost 200 years, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) is the cornerstone of governments work with one of our most important transport sectors.  An Executive Agency sponsored by the Department for Transport (DfT), we work to prevent the loss of life on the coast and at sea, produce legislation and guidance on maritime matters, and provide certification to ships and seafarers. We also provide a 24/7 maritime search and rescue service around the UK coast, and international search and rescue, through HM Coastguard. We are the only UK-wide emergency services organisation, and our team of around 1,000 staff and 3,500 volunteers makes a vital contribution to the UKs economic wellbeing, public safety, and international reputation.

The MCA has a long and distinguished past, but a dynamic and challenging present and future. As such, the organisation is looking to appoint a Non-Executive Director who will embrace the challenge of providing a high-quality service while adapting to the changing needs and commercial imperatives of the global shipping sector. As an independent member of the MCA Board, the MCA Sponsorship Board, and the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee, you will lean on your commercial nous, excellent judgement, and outstanding leadership credentials to constructively challenge and support as needed. Major projects and programmes will benefit from your knowledge and experience as well as organisational and necessary to meet the challenges ahead.

Financially qualified, you have successfully led at Director level or equivalent in a substantial, complex business. Change management has featured strongly in your career, especially technologically enabled change, and technology will, ideally, have sat within your portfolio, too. Confident, charismatic, and credible, your relationship management and communication skills are impeccable, and you will have a track record of challenging executive colleagues in a constructive and insightful way. Prior track record as a non-executive would be helpful, and the MCA welcomes applications with transferable skills and experience from sectors outside shipping. Candidates from the private sector will have the intellectual horsepower to adapt to new financial and commercial practices in a public sector context.
