Job Description

DSTL Porton Down, Salisbury, Wiltshire

Dstl is responsible for designing, developing and applying the very latest in science and technology for the benefit of UK defence and security, across government. In our work, we partner with other brilliant people collaborating with everyone from small companies and world-class universities, to large defence organisations and other nations. Together, we develop cutting-edge technologies, based on deep and widespread research.

Right now, were looking for an experienced Bioinformatician or Computational Biologist whos keen to tackle some of Defence & Securitys most interesting future problems. Joining a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team, youll help us improve the UKs defensive capabilities against chemical, biological and radiological agents.

Your main task is to support research by analysing sequencing data generated using various experimental platforms. Youll then design and apply appropriate bioinformatics pipelines. Well also expect you to advise bench scientists on experimental design, execution and analysis, so strong communication skills will be absolutely vital.

To excel, youll need a high level of computer literacy including knowledge of various computational and bioinformatics tools. Your expertise should cover Linux operating systems and scripting tools (e.g. Python, Java, Shell scripting). These technical talents should come with a proven track record in research (long and short read sequencing), plus a degree (or equivalent) and a sense of teamwork. Youll also need the ability to express yourself well, both in person and on paper.

Through your work, you can drive the progress of computational biology for all research areas. Whats more, theres the chance to develop new research solutions for challenging technical questions. But perhaps the most rewarding part of the role is supporting UK national security: answering key questions quickly, undertaking projects and assisting Defence acquisition programmes alongside national and international experts.
