Job Description

The Board of Trustees of the creative writing charity, Arvon, seeks an inspirational new Chief Executive and Artistic Director to succeed Ruth Borthwick, who will stand down next April after 10 highly successful years in the role. Arvon is a thriving and ambitious arts charity, celebrated for its unique ability to discover and develop the writer in everyone. The organization produces an annual programme of residential creative writing courses at three remarkable writers houses in Shropshire, Devon and Yorkshire. A third of its residential weeks are with schools, young people and disadvantaged adult groups.

The new Chief Executive and Artistic Director will provide leadership, strategic direction, artistic vision and long-term financial stability and growth for Arvon, leading the charity to increased reputation in the UK and abroad in its second half-century. With the planned redevelopment of Lumb Bank, the charitys Centre in Yorkshire, the Chief Executive will be responsible for spearheading the fundraising campaign and delivering the new facilities.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced senior leader in the arts or cultural sector with proven ability in setting strategy, overseeing artistic programming, managing significant budgets and leading a large team. S/he will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a stylex of working that is flexible, open and collaborative. Ambitious to help the charity grow in scope and reputation, the new Chief Executive and Artistic Director will have strong advocacy and fundraising skills and experience in developing and establishing new commercial revenue streams. Knowledge of, and a passion for the transformational power of creative writing for those from all backgrounds and ages are an essential requirement for this position. Experience of leading and delivering a major capital project is desirable.
