Job Description

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) plays a vital role in protecting the public as the independent regulator of nurses, midwives and, from January 2019, nursing associates. Our ambition is to be an intelligent, dynamic regulator who puts patients and the public at the heart of all we do.

We are now seeking a Chief Executive and Registrar who will bring a fresh approach to the way we work. You will be a visible and inspirational leader both internally and externally. Working in partnership with the Council, you will be committed to transparency, openness and listening to the voice of those we serve, to build confidence and trust in all we do. You will bring the ability to think strategically in a high-profile public policy environment and be a credible advocate for the organisation, skilled in navigating complex stakeholder relationships at the most senior levels across the four UK countries.

This is a highly visible role subject to considerable public and stakeholder scrutiny, demanding resilience and self-awareness. You will have an excellent track record of running a complex organisation and supporting an Executive team in delivering innovation and improvement in a fast moving environment. A good understanding of regulation will be vital. Although there is no requirement to have experience in the health sector, you will need to be passionate about the commitment you can make to patient and public protection. You will be committed to living our values and to the principles of public life and to equality diversity and inclusion.

We are a statutory body, accountable to Parliament through the Privy Council and a registered charity in England and Wales [1091434] and in Scotland [SCO38362]. We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcome diversity of thought, approach and background in all our people.
