Job Description

We are seeking to appoint one lay and one medical member for our governing Council*.

You will join us at a critical point in our relationship with doctors and the four UK governments. Our new corporate strategy an ambition for change - shifts the emphasis of our work from acting when things have gone wrong, to supporting all doctors to deliver the highest standards of care. This is the best way to keep both patients and doctors safe.

We are responsible for setting the standards for medical students and doctors, for supporting them in achieving and exceeding those standards, and for taking action whenever these are not met.

We work hard to promote professionalism and a culture of learning. But learning and insight isnt just for doctors - it applies to us too, and underpins everything we are doing to be a more active and proportionate regulator. We have pushed our outdated legislation to the limit in the last five years through being prepared to identify issues and engage with the profession, so that we understand better the context in which doctors practise and the pressures they face.

Our Council comprises 12 members (6 lay and 6 medical). It sets our strategy, defines our high-level policies and is responsible for making sure that we fulfil our statutory and charitable purposes. The two vacancies are open to applicants from any of the four UK countries.

Applicants for these roles must be able to contribute to setting strategy, exercising oversight and ensuring effective corporate governance. Additional desirable knowledge and skills are sought for specific areas, including significant level chairing experience, of leading organisations and governance experience; commercial acumen; financial/business management; investment income generation; information systems and communication technology; the legal sector; new media and communications.

The time commitment for the role will be up to three days a month and remuneration is £18,000 per year. The successful candidates are expected to take up the roles from 1 January 2019.

For further information please click on the Apply button and for an informal confidential discussion contact our advising consultants at GatenbySanderson: Katrina Paget or Duncan Ewart on 0207 426 3994.

Closing date: 12.00 noon on Wednesday 1 August 2018

*The current process to appoint a new Chair to take up the post on 1 January 2019 will determine whether the Council member vacancies to be filled will be two medical members or one medical and one lay member. In the event that the new Chair designate is a lay appointee, both Council member vacancies will be for medical members.
