Established in 2000 under the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 1998, the Police Ombudsman exists to provide an independent and impartial police complaints system for the people of Northern Ireland. We receive and investigate complaints against the police made by members of the public and also matters of public interest involving the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). With 140 staff and a budget of £9 million, the Police Ombudsman handles around 3,000 cases per annum and plays a pivotal role in the criminal justice system in Northern Ireland.

We are looking for an exceptional Chief Executive with strong leadership, governance and management credentials, who can ensure effective oversight and control of serious and complex investigations while managing a volume complaints business in a fair and thorough fashion. Our work is high profile and our independence and impartiality critical to our credibility, as is building trust and confidence with the public and our stakeholders.

An authentic and experienced leader, you will need to establish excellent working relations

with staff at all levels, both internally and with the diverse range of individuals, organisations

and communities we work with. Acute political sensitivity, excellent judgement and the highest levels of integrity are essential. This appointment offers a real opportunity to deliver tangible improvements in police oversight and foster greater confidence in policing in Northern Ireland.
