Job Description

Durham is one of the worlds great universities. With a global reputation for excellence in research and education, we are listed 5th in The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018 and feature in the top 100 of World University Rankings for 2017-2018. As a respected member of the Russell Group of leading research-intensive universities, we are a community of colleagues with a passion for excellence in everything we do. Our academics and students are at the heart of our distinctive offering, set within a small and beautiful city while providing a modern, culturally vibrant university with links which span the globe.

We are looking to appoint two new Lay Members to our University Council, who will help us deliver our ambitious strategy. As a University we embrace change and constantly push boundaries and ourselves.  We anticipate that our new Lay Members will bring a strategic outlook, considerable integrity and the personal credibility to contribute as part of an engaged and forward-thinking Council.  Responsible for determining key business decisions and for monitoring organisational and executive outcomes, our new Lay Members will help ensure that we operate to the highest standards of governance and performance in all that we do.

Drawing on your extensive business acumen and judgement, this is an outstanding opportunity to help us achieve our regional, national and global aims. We are particularly interested in candidates with career backgrounds within strategic finance from the financial services sector or comparably large and complex organisations; international leadership experience from multinational organisations; highly influential executive or governance roles within the third-sector and fundraising; or those with a deep knowledge of complex regulated environments. Having worked at a senior strategic level and developed a reputation for influencing others in multi-stakeholder environments, you will share our commitment to delivering excellence and help us build on our many strengths across research, education and the wider student experience.
