Job Description

The General Medical Council is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. It is dedicated to protecting patients across the United Kingdom by ensuring high standards of medical education and practice. It does this by working with doctors, government health departments, employers, medical educators and patient groups. As part of the its drive to be a more agile, confident and connected regulator, the GMC is establishing a new Strategy function within the Strategy and Policy directorate, to be headed up by a new Assistant Director. The post holder will work very closely with the Director and the two existing Assistant Directors to develop this strategy function. build a team to support it and lead and provide clear direction of its work. Key areas of focus will include: leading the development of the GMCs future strategy; the provision of capacity and capability for responding proactively and at pace to a wide range of strategic policy issues; medium and long-term horizon scanning work and supporting GMC Services International Limited (commercial trading arm of the GMC) with strategic projects. The post holder will bring innovation and vision to the role, together with a different approach to policy and strategy development and the ability to change the way we think about and deal with this across the GMC. He or she will have a successful and strong track record gained in a senior role within a challenging regulatory, political or similar environment. Considerable and demonstrable expertise in strategic development and delivery is required as is a proven track record of developing significant strategic or policy projects and work programmes and of working effectively with stakeholders to deliver successful outcomes. Candidates will also bring of knowledge of current trends and developments in regulatory theory and practice. This is a significant and influential role and you will bring outstanding interpersonal skills, together with the credibility, personal presence and influencing skills to engage effectively with our many and varied stakeholders.
