Job Description

Location: Central London Time commitment: This role is offered on an expected time basis of up to 3 days per week. Remuneration: £140,000 per annum, pro rata. Do you want to play a leading role in challenging and defeating extremism? If so, this is an exceptional opportunity to provide the Government with advice and support as it steps up its response to extremism and the harm it causes across society and within communities. Government is establishing a new Commission for Countering Extremism that will identify examples of extremism and expose them, support the public sector and civil society, and help the government to identify policies to tackle extremism and promote the pluralistic values that embody 21st century Britain. As the Prime Minister said on the steps of Downing Street after the London Bridge attack, enough is enough. The Commission is being established to drive fresh thinking within Government, and more widely. It will lead the difficult conversations required to identify and challenge tolerance of extremism, and understand where future challenges may lie. The Commission will apply the lessons learned from how civil society and the state worked together to take on racism in the twentieth century, and will chart a new path, advising across the full range of extremism. As Lead Commissioner your first priorities will be to Lead a national conversation on extremism and pluralistic British values with the public sector, communities, civil society, and legal and academic experts (among others), to inform the Commissions scope and priorities; Advise Ministers on the Commissions future structures, work programme and the appointment of further commissioners; and Undertake a range of research and studies, to inform policy development. The successful candidate will therefore have the ability to develop and foster strong and constructive relationships across a broad range of stakeholders, including Ministers, Parliament, the Devolved Administrations, government officials, the public sector (police, Local Authorities, regulatory bodies such as Ofcom and Ofsted, and the education and health sectors), civil society, faith groups and local communities. The Lead Commissioner will provide the primary interface with Government Ministers and other stakeholders, including the public and media, and will be accountable for ensuring the timely delivery of the Commissions agreed programme of work. This will be a three fixed term appointment with the possibility of re-appointment.
