Job Description

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is the independent regulator for barristers and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales. The BSB sets the entry requirements for the profession and draws up the rules and guidance for how barristers practise. It maintains high standards in the profession through its supervision and assurance work, and if things go wrong it can take enforcement or disciplinary action. The BSB plays an important role in the good administration of justice and the upholding of the rule of law in England and Wales. We now seek to appoint a Chair and three Lay Board Members who will work with others to lead the organisation through a time of far reaching change in the legal services market and its regulation. Over the next ten years, barristers in England and Wales will continue to face major challenges. These include changing consumer demands and expectations, significant reductions in public funding for Legal Aid and the justice system, technological advances and global competition. The BSB must ensure that its regulation is risk-based, proportionate and agile in a changing legal services and regulatory landscape. The Board must be ready to adapt and to participate in shaping change. So this is an exciting time to join the BSB. As Chair you will lead the development of Board strategy, policy and planning, inspiring a complex network of internal and external stakeholders. An experienced non-executive who has never been a member of the legal profession, you will have a significant and successful track record of senior leadership gained in either the public, private or third sector, together with demonstrable experience of working with and influencing boards. You will be able to show a commitment to upholding standards and ensuring good governance and transparency and will understand the role a professional regulator plays. You will be a visible and motivating leader, exercising diplomacy and sensitivity when required yet willing to challenge the status quo when needed. You will be an advocate for the Board?s work. Your integrity, standing and judgement will inspire public confidence in the regulatory arrangements and hold the respect of a highly educated, demanding and articulate profession. Our Lay Board Members will bring a range of knowledge, skills and experience from either the private, public or third sectors to help us continue to regulate in the public interest and follow best practice for modern regulators. You will have an awareness of the issues facing the justice system and the legal services market. You should be able to provide high-level strategic thinking, advice and leadership on the development and implementation of policy relating to the work of the BSB. You will also appreciate the distinction between management and governance as you work with the Chair and the executive team to achieve the BSB?s objectives. For further information, please visit www.BSBAppointments.com All candidates must meet the definition of a ?lay person? as defined by the Legal Services Act. They must never have been authorised to supply legal services by an approved regulator (e.g. as a barrister, solicitor, legal executive etc.) or have been a Scottish solicitor or advocate or a Northern Irish solicitor or barrister. Closing date for CHAIR: 5pm on Thursday 10th August 2017 Closing date for LAY BOARD MEMBERS: 5pm on Friday 15th September 2017 The BSB is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified individuals
