The Financial Ombudsman Service is the independent statutory service that settles individual disputes between consumers and financial businesses. As an alternative to the courts, it plays a key role in enhancing consumer protection and building confidence in financial services. It works with a wide range of stakeholders, including financial businesses, regulators, government and consumer advice and advocacy agencies.
The ombudsman service expects to handle over 1.7 million enquiries and 400,000 disputes this year - with a workforce approaching 4,000 and a cost base of 250m.
The governing body is a board of non-executive directors, appointed by the Financial Conduct Authority, which currently comprises six members. Between them, they bring a wealth of experience from backgrounds ranging from the law and business to public policy and customer service.
With two NED opportunities on offer, the ombudsman is looking for individuals with board experience (ideally in a non-executive role) who can bring expertise in one or more of the following areas: customer service, public affairs, social policy, policy development, marketing or retail. A proven ability to help shape strategy, ensure robust governance arrangements and monitor performance are also important, as are strong communication and interpersonal skills.
