Job Description

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care is looking to appoint a Non-Executive Member (NEM) to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). UKHSA is responsible for protecting the UK against infectious diseases and environmental hazards. It is an executive agency of the Department of Health and Social Care.

UKHSA’s NEMs provide independent and constructive challenge to enable the Board to achieve its responsibilities. This includes contributing to the development of the Agency’s strategic direction and objectives; contributing to the governance of the Agency; monitoring and advising on organisational performance; acting as an ambassador for the Agency with stakeholders; becoming a member of at least one UKHSA Board Committee; identifying matters that may adversely affect the reputation or public trust in the Agency; and providing independent counsel, support, and constructive challenge to the Executive.

Candidates will have a career track record of achievement in a significant senior role in either the public or private sector and will be able to operate effectively on the board of a major national organisation.

Candidates must also be able to demonstrate interest in the work of UKHSA; excellent communication skills; sound judgement; experience of strategic thinking; and an ability to scrutinise and challenge complex proposals constructively.

Candidates with previous senior experience in the pharmaceutical industry are of particular interest, though this is not essential.

Remuneration will be £7,883 per annum and for a time commitment of two to three days per month. The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care determines the length of the appointment, which may be up to a maximum of 3 years.
