Job Description

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care is looking to appoint up to 6 Members to the Board of the Food Standards Agency (FSA).  

The FSA has a statutory remit to protect public health and the interests of consumers in relation to food safety and standards.

As a Member of the FSA, you will be responsible for ensuring the FSA discharges its statutory duties.  You will also set and reinforce the FSA’s core values through the development and monitoring of strategic objectives, plans, and policies.  

You will be required to effectively contribute at Board meetings and participate in one or more of the Board Committees; and represent the FSA in communications with key stakeholders.

To be considered for the role of Non-Executive Member of the FSA you must have experience of working with, or on behalf of the public and an ability to represent consumer interests.  You will have strong decision-making skills and be able to assess complex evidence. 

Applicants will be required to demonstrate being a strategic thinker and have strong communication and interpersonal skills, including championing diversity and able to confidently deal with difficult situations sensitively.  In addition, you must have the ability to achieve significant change and operate across complex networks.  

Members will ideally be able to bring skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

experience in public (or environmental) health in relation to food 

operational experience of Local Government 

experience in the food sector (primary production, manufacture, supply chain, retail - including small and medium-sized enterprises)

expertise in safety and standards in the food industry 

veterinary experience 

experience in corporate or commercial financial strategy 

experience in regulatory compliance, audit and assurance

criminal investigative skills

experience in (or understanding of) how a national regulator works.

Remuneration will be £8,000 per annum for a time commitment of 20 days per annum.  The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care determines the length of appointment, which may be for up to a maximum of 3 or 4 years.  The start date for one of the member roles will be deferred until November 2025, this is to align with end date for one of the existing members.
