Ranked 6th best university in the UK, 34th in the world (QS World University Rankings) and 2nd in the world for Social Impact, the University of Manchester is a thriving institution. It is the largest single-site university in the UK with the biggest student community and more than 12,000 staff. We are ranked among the leading research universities globally and have pioneering research collaborations with leading companies such as AstraZeneca and Siemens. The University is based within one of the most exciting global cities. In collaboration with our partners, we are leading the development of a new £1.5bn world-class innovation district: ID Manchester, a launchpad for ideas that will bring together academics, entrepreneurs, innovators and industry. The University is now looking to appoint three Lay Members to its Board of Governors with effect from 1 September 2024. As the Universitys governing body, the Board has ultimate responsibility for the Universitys overall strategic direction and for the management of its finances.
The University is seeking individuals who will bring a breadth of experience at a senior level, alongside knowledge of complex governance from the private, public, or third sectors and particularly welcome applications from underrepresented groups. Based on an assessment of current and future skills needs, the University is looking to attract candidates who bring senior experience in one or more of the following three areas; performance improvement, finance (ideally with an accountancy qualification), organisational development and current or recent experience as a Chief Executive Officer. In addition to this, the Board is looking to attract individuals with a connection with the Greater Manchester region and an understanding of regional context and dynamics, as well as those with an understanding of the national and international political context. We welcome expressions of interest from those who have experience of operating in organisations of similar scale and complexity to the University; experience of delivery of a high-quality student experience is also welcome.
