Job Description

SENIOR POLICY OFFICER - RACE EQUALITY

Based in the NEU Hamilton House Office (London, WC1H 9BD)

Full-time, permanent

Commencing salary £59,282 per annum plus £1,092 lunch allowance

The National Education Union is a campaigning union which aims to shape the future of education and we bring together more than 450,000 teachers, lecturers, support staff and leaders. Our members work in maintained and independent schools and colleges across the UK.

We’re looking for an authoritative and experienced education policy specialist to lead our race equality programme, which encompasses policy, research and campaigns about the impact of race and class in education.  We are a union campaigning for a holistic and equitable vision of education where all students have a sense of belonging in their school and towards a profession where anti racist approaches are embedded and schools reflect their communities.

We are seeking an innovative and creative thinker to develop and implement strategies on how to shape the national debate on racism and race inequality in education and within work. The role involves utilising and commissioning research about race inequality and how it impacts on different groups of students; and research around the experiences of Black staff in the education sector, particularly Black women.

You will need to possess the skills and credibility to represent members and will require experience of leading on race equality policy or campaigns in similar environments. We require understanding of a trade union approach and Union strategies on improving workplaces and engaging employers and stakeholders through bargaining and campaigning.

We hope you will bring experience of both teaching and research but will also need to demonstrate experience of leading and managing people and projects, ideally in an organisation focused on race inequality or social justice.

In addition to salary, we offer good conditions including a non-pensionable luncheon allowance currently set at £1,092, 33 days’ annual leave plus Christmas closure days and a defined benefit pension scheme. Salary and benefits are pro-rata for part-time applicants.

Further details can be downloaded from our website at https://neu.org.uk/working-neu where applicants will be able to complete an online application on our recruitment portal. Closing date is mid-day Tuesday 28th June 2022.

We welcome applications from individuals seeking part-time, job-share or other flexible working arrangements.

THE UNION IS FUNDAMENTALLY COMMITTED TO EQUAL OPPORTUNIES IN ITS POLICIES AND PRACTICE
