About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join us and influence real change across our East England region. Help drive our vision forward: a vision of a more sustainable future in transport that has never been more relevant.

As the Network Development Manager, you will seek to shape and develop the future vision of the National Cycle Network, identifying new routes and improving existing ones in line with our Paths for Everyone vision.

A key objective of this role is to ensure a continued pipeline of infrastructure development projects for year-on-year construction of the Network, which will involve:

- concept and feasibility design

- determining funding opportunities

- getting support from landowners, local authorities and partners.

In this role, you will own the management of the National Cycle Network infrastructure delivery programme in the region, including overseeing, commissioning and tracking the progress of internal teams and delivery partners involved in Network delivery.

You will build and manage internal and external relationships with key people in local authorities, landowners, partners and other colleagues in Sustrans.

This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans. Candidates should be based within commutable distance of our office hubs in either Nottingham or Birmingham.

What our staff say

“My role involves:

- managing a wide variety of Department-for-Transport-funded projects (construction, design and feasibility)

- engaging with Local Authorities on Network-related schemes and general walking/cycling plans

- creating Network Development Plans for each county, looking at potential improvements to bring the Network up to LTN 1/20 and Paths for Everyone standard

- connecting with volunteers to assist with various tasks

- working across other teams with engineers, ecologists and community engagement officers.

"What I enjoy most about my role is working with a range of people from different departments, meaning I’m learning technical skills, about ecology and biodiversity, comms and marketing etc.”

Rosalind Bacon, Network Development Manager for East of England

About you

You will build relationships with ease, bringing with you experience of working cross-organisationally and across multiple sectors. You will use these skills to enhance existing partnerships with organisations such as local authorities and the Department for Transport.

With demonstrable experience in delivering projects, you will have a working background within the engineering, transport or construction sectors (including landscape architecture or urban and park design). You should also have a good understanding of CDM 2015.

Your creative approach to finding innovative solutions, while applying known methodologies, will help you advocate for sustainable transport and better places across the region.

You must be a skilled communicator with excellent negotiating skills, as you will play a key role in liaising with landowners to develop high-quality infrastructure and reshape our towns, cities and countryside in favour of active travel.

We aim to be a truly inclusive employer and welcome applications from people from all parts of the community, in particular from under-represented groups. Sustrans is committed to reducing inequality, valuing diversity and enabling inclusion.
