College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences/ School of Divinity

Open Ended Contract, Full time 35 hours per week

The School of Divinity is looking to appoint a scholar working at the intersection of Islam and Christianity. In particular, the post-holder will collaborate with colleagues from the School of Law, the School of Social and Political Sciences, and Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.

The Opportunity:

Applications are invited from scholars with research interests and teaching experience in the historical, scriptural, legal, and/or theological engagement between Islam and Christianity. The University of Edinburgh is a world leader in this area with a growing portfolio of grants and international collaborations, as well as an increasing cohort of undergraduate and postgraduate students. In order to expand our research capacity, advance grant capture, and to support core teaching and supervision, the School of Divinity is looking to appoint a scholar working at the intersection of Islam and Christianity. In particular, the post-holder will collaborate with colleagues from the School of Law, the School of Social and Political Sciences, and Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.

Consideration will be given to candidates whose primarily research areas lie within either Islamic Studies or Christian-Muslim Relations, broadly conceived. We especially welcome candidates with an expertise in one of the following areas: Christian-Muslim relations during the formative and classical period of Islam; the Qur’an and the Bible; and Islamic Law and Theology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses, further develop postgraduate teaching and supervision including contributing to the School’s masters in Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations, and develop grant and foundation applications.

We welcome applications for this post from all qualified candidates and particularly welcome applications from members of minority ethnic groups, who are currently under-represented in the School of Divinity.

Your skills and attributes for success:

An earned doctorate in Islamic Studies, Christian Theology and/or relevant academic discipline, conferred by date of agreed employment.

Proven ability to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Islamic Studies and/or Christian-Muslim Relations.

A developed area of research and evident progress in achieving quality original research publications commensurate with your career stage.
