“Everything we do is to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve, and to promote mental health and wellbeing for all.”

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust operates across more than 90 sites in South London, providing not only core mental health services to our four local boroughs (Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Croydon), but we also offer 50 specialist mental health services nationwide. Part of the South London Mental Health and Community Partnership, we also work closely in partnership with a variety of organisations across London, within both the South East London and South West London Integrated Care Systems, as part of King’s Health Partners, and with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. Rated as “Good” by the CQC, the Trust has over 4,800 staff working at the cutting edge of mental health delivery.

Our ambitious five-year strategy Aiming High; Changing Lives sets out our vision to offer each and every person outstanding treatment and support to enable their recovery and to help them live a fulfilling life. We are beginning to see greater investment in mental health to correct years of underfunding, in tandem with a positive shift in societal attitudes to mental health which will strengthen our work to speak up against stigma. This backdrop presents a hugely exciting opportunity for us, those we care for, and our local communities and partners. Together, we believe we can be outstanding.

We will build on the commitments set out in the NHS Long Term Plan and on our existing work pioneering new models of care to take our ambitions one step further such as the development of the Lambeth Alliance and One Croydon Alliance and through Provider Collaboratives as part of the South London Partnership.

The Trust is now looking to appoint some high calibre people to play important roles on our Board and with the Council of Governors. Our partnerships are a key aspect of our success, and we need NEDs with the empathy to understand how best to collaborate as well as understanding the needs of the people who use our services. Continually improving quality in a financially challenged local health and care system is no easy task, but the roles offer the opportunity to play a leadership role in the largest mental health provider in the country as it embarks on the next stage of its transformational journey.

For the NED posts we require exceptional board leadership skills from a similarly large and complex environment- whatever sector you have gained this experience in – and you will need to have a passion for quality and excellence to match that of our dedicated workforce. We are particularly looking for someone with financial expertise and qualifications to Chair our Audit Committee, and someone with commercial property expertise to input into our capital programmes.

We are also seeking an Associate (non-voting) Non-Executive Director who can be a voice for our communities; this role is designed be a development opportunity for someone who aspires to be a Non-Executive Director and applications are welcome from people who may not yet have any Board level experience.

With excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you will be experienced in building and developing relationships and partnerships with a variety of stakeholders, understanding how best to navigate a complex network of competing interests to get the best outcomes for patients and service users.

Our organisation cannot provide quality care without equality. We want our organisation to be the best mental health trust in the country – known not only for the excellent services we deliver to people but for how staff support and value each other as equals. As a Trust, we want to be known for our action on anti-racism and this will be a golden thread throughout all our work. We are committed to tackling discrimination and embracing diversity across our organisation, we would particularly welcome applications from people with experience of mental illness or of caring for someone with a mental illness; from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds; and from different socio-economic, age and educational backgrounds..

If you believe you share our values and vision, and have the experience, skills and knowledge required, then we would be delighted to hear from you.
