Job Description

£110,000 for 3 days per week

From driving the strategic direction of the GMC, to representing our organisation to political and media stakeholders, as Chair you will help steer us through a critical time as we fulfil our purpose to protect patient safety.

Our vision is to be an effective, relevant and compassionate regulator to support the medical profession to deliver first-class patient care. As health services in the UK continue to face intense pressure, regulation has a pivotal role to play in protecting patients and promoting the wellbeing of the profession. Your leadership and vision will be vital in shaping healthcare in the years ahead.

We have set ambitious commitments to address inequality, embrace diversity, and support inclusion within healthcare, both as a regulator and an employer. Championing this work will be a key focus for our new Chair.

You will be joining at a landmark moment in our history, as the government overhauls the outdated legislation governing the GMC and we take on regulation of physician associates and anaesthesia associates. This programme of regulatory reform will affect all GMC functions and processes and the Chair will help us define the programme that best achieves our strategic ambitions.

The successful applicant will lead the Council, setting the strategic direction of the GMC and holding the organisation to account. The Chair will represent the GMC in stakeholder and speaking engagements with the profession, politicians, patients and the media. This is a high-profile, influential role and your personal credibility, strong diplomatic skills and ability to command confidence will be core to your work for us. You must have a demonstrable record of leadership in substantial roles and proven board level experience.

If you can demonstrate the skills required, regardless of background, please do apply. You do not need to be medically-qualified. We are committed to being a diverse and inclusive organisation; one that reflects the doctors we work with and the public that we represent, We actively encourage those with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply to work with us.

The time commitment and remuneration for the Chair is expected to be 3 days per week and £110,000 per year.
