Job Description

Ranked in the top 100 universities globally and the University of the year for graduate employment by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020, the University of Manchester is a thriving institution. It is the largest single-site university in the UK with the biggest student community and more than 12,000 staff. The University is now looking to appoint a new Lay Member to the University Board with the expertise to Chair the Audit & Risk Committee.

The University is seeking a suitably qualified individual with significant executive level financial responsibility. The role will particularly suit someone who has moved to a plural NED career, with executive and/or NED experience gained in a third sector/social enterprise setting (e.g housing associations, NHS Trusts, large charitable organisations). Significant experience of chairing Boards and or/senior committees in either an executive or NED capacity is essential, as the person appointed will assume the currently vacant position of Chair of Audit and Risk Committee. An understanding of digital risk (including those related to digital transformation and cyber) would be additional, preferable but not essential attributes. Being based in the North West region would also be advantageous.

Candidates will have experience of operating in organisations of similar scale and complexity to the University, together with a keen interest in and empathy for Higher Education. The University would particularly welcome and encourage applications from women, Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority candidates, candidates with disabilities and candidates with other characteristics that would further enhance the diversity of the Board.

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to the University of Manchester on this appointment. Alternatively, telephone +44 (0)20 7227 0880 (during office hours). Applications should be received by noon on 15 October 2021.
