Job Description

SPORT WALES

Chair

Can you make a real difference to sport in Wales and help us to create an active, healthy and successful nation?

Are you passionate about the benefits of sport and physical activity for all, have a commitment to public service and have the capacity to think differently, be supportive, objective and determined?

Remuneration: A minimum of 2 days per week £337 per day

Commitment: The role requires a commitment of approximately two days per week for a term of three years, and can offer a flexible approach to duties, combining on-line and in-person attendance at meetings, events and other engagements.

The Welsh Government is seeking an exceptional individual to take on the role of Chair of Sport Wales from August 2022, but to be available prior to the appointment commencing in order to complete a handover with the existing chair.

Are you the right person to help transform Wales into an active nation; ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy being physically active? If you are that person, then you will become part of an organisation that isn’t just delivering physical and mental health benefits to the people of Wales, but contributing to improving wider social cohesion and the wider development of young people in schools.

We are looking for an individual who can lead the organisation to deliver a strategy which creates an active and successful sporting nation.  We want someone who is ambitious in their thinking, determined to make an impact and is committed to taking action to ensure everyone in Wales can enjoy the benefits of sport.

As Chair you will lead on the overall strategic direction of Sport Wales, and in delivering the Welsh Government’s policy on sport and physical activity. You will also inspire the rest of Sport Wales by directing the Board and working with our key partners. You and the Vice Chair will act as the main points of contact between the Board, Ministers and government officials. A good knowledge of the public sector and previous board or Chair experience would be beneficial. Now is a great time to play your part and to lead the delivery of the vision and strategy for sport in Wales.

Appropriate training will be provided, and expenses may be claimed for care, travel and subsistence.

The full person specification and essential criteria are included in the applicants’ information pack.

The ability to speak Welsh fluently is desirable but not essential. All applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to working in a bilingual Wales.

If you would like an informal discussion about the role of Chair, please contact Jason Thomas, Director of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Welsh Government (Jason.Thomas@gov.wales)

It is the policy of the Welsh Government and Sport Wales to promote and integrate equality of opportunity and diversity into all aspects of their business, including appointments to public bodies.
